Sen. Chuck Schumer doesn't worry about embarrassing himself, as long as he can appease far-left progressives who are pressuring the Democrat Party to move way left.
Earlier this year, Schumer called two Senate votes that he must have known would fail. He wanted to change the filibuster rule and failed. He also took a vote on legislation to federalize elections, the so-called "For the People Act." This disastrous legislation, which would have stretched out elections for many weeks and opened the floodgates to fraudulent activities such as ballot harvesting, was defeated, 52-48. Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona voted against the bill.
The other day, Schumer -- ever the glutton for punishment -- went to the Senate floor again for a vote on a draconian abortion bill that the Democrats claim would "codify" Roe V. Wade. What the so-called Women's Health Protection Act would have done was ride roughshod over state abortion laws, thus disenfranchising millions of voters who are guaranteed a say in their states' laws by the Tenth Amendment. This amendment codifies the philosophy of federalism -- i.e., powers and rights not delegated to the federal government become the purview of the states and their citizens.
Although the Democrats tried to spin this bill as something that would allow late term abortion only in extreme cases such as when the mother's physical or mental health were fragile and she was in danger of death or incapacitation, this was not true. The language was broad enough to allow many late term abortions -- i.e., infanticide. The final margin was 51-49, because Manchin voted no. Even pro-choice Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against this barbaric bill.
Schumer doesn't mind another failure. He just needs to demonstrate his progressive bona fides to ensure the far left voters and party leadership don't lose their enthusiasm for him in what is sure to be a red wave come November. He may well be in the minority beginning next year.
A side note: Several major media outlets, including the New York Times, Associated Press, Public Broadcasting System, and many others, grossly misreported the vote against the abortion-on-demand bill, stating that the GOP succeeded in filibustering to ensure its failure. Duh!?!? The filibuster is a freakin' MOOT POINT when the majority votes AGAINST a bill! This is bizarro world. Are the media stooges ignorant? Stupid? Or just plain in-your-face mendacious? Possibly all of the above.
Words cannot express how much contempt I have for the garbage media and the jackals who are part of it. It's hard to think of a physical analogy, but grubs crawling underneath rocks come to mind.
