As was apparent for months and has become glaringly clear in the past week, observing Kamala Harris as vice president is about as painful as watching a high school quarterback playing in the Super Bowl, or an 11th grade pitcher trying to face the L.A. Dodgers in the World Series. Can you say, 'In over her head'???
It was obvious a couple of years ago that she was a lightweight when she fared pitifully in the Democrat primaries, garnering only about 2 or 3 percent of the vote. She was an early exit, and failed to come close to Joe Biden in the number of votes she received from African-Americans.
Matter of fact, many blacks resented her because when she served as a prosecutor in the 1990s, she was known to throw the book at black defendants who were up on serious charges such as murder or narcotics offenses. She's also half Indian, so in the minds of some purists, she doesn't count as an "authentic black."
But what has become obvious during the few short months she & Sleepy Joe have been in office is that she's not a deep thinker, and in fact seems shallow and highly insecure. Often, she answers questions with a flippant response and an annoying cackle. Definitely not what one would expect from any person holding such a high and prestigious office.
Most people who are realistic about Harris knew she wouldn't accomplish anything when the Big Guy put her in charge of the crisis on the southern border. Basically, her hands are tied, because Biden so insists on doing the opposite of what Trump did, he'll double and triple down on it no matter how bad a fiasco it creates.
Recently, Kamala had trouble with none other than NBC's Lester Holt, who's definitely one of the friendlier interviewers she'll ever see. She claimed she had already been to the border (she has not) and came up with a bizarre equivalency by responding to his question with, "I've never been to Europe, either." WHAT???
When she visited Guatemala and Mexico, it was obvious the presidents of those two nations have nothing but disdain and disrespect for her. Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei bluntly blamed Biden for the border crisis. Guatemalan protesters waved banners saying "TRUMP WON" and "Go Home Kamala." Normally, these international summits are scripted and choreographed, and the hosts are supposed to lick the guests' boots. But not this time. This visit turned into a P.R. disaster for the VP, and by extension, for the entire stinkin' administration.
Like any naive and idealistic liberal, Harris spoke of high-minded plans to invest in Central American countries -- infrastructure, schools, industry -- and demanded more transparency. But corruption is so intertwined with the cultures of these countries, it's extremely difficult to attract investors, build confidence and force transparency in government institutions. Anyone with a brain knows this is a heavy lift, and it will take years to clean up the rot. Throwing more money at the problems will do nothing to alleviate the current border meltdown.
Inconsistent messaging is also confusing as hell. Recall that during a 2019 debate, Biden encouraged poor Latinos to "immediately surge to the border" when he became president. Harris tweeted encouragement to illegal immigrants to head north. But now, she lamely says, "Do not come."
Finally, Kamala's vanity and narcissism are utterly inappropriate, and demonstrate she doesn't have the seriousness of purpose that is needed during these difficult times. The Friday before Memorial Day, she tweeted out a smiling picture of herself with, "Enjoy the long weekend." On the flight to Central America, "Kamala cookies" bearing a likeness of her head were passed out. This is pathetic.
I can't help but suspect that Biden is regretting having chosen Harris to be his running mate, and his administration may be already trying to undermine her. Someone from inside the administration said some unflattering things about her spectacular failures in Central America, and CNN reported the story.
Could Biden be hoping to bring in a different stooge -- one who's a lot smarter and more capable of interacting with world leaders? Maybe. Or perhaps I'm totally wrong. Maybe he loves seeing her stumble because it makes him look good in comparison.
Whatever his motive, this is truly a sad spectacle. How far we've fallen.
Maybe that "glitch" in Air Force 2 was either a message, or a failed attempt to rectify the problem.
