One factor that also sets this season apart: the loss of almost the entire 2016 recruiting class.

In previous seasons, MSU had a reserve of experienced players to draw upon for leadership. That is gone here, and the effects of its absence are painfully clear.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The 2016 blight is passing and bigger, more traditional recruits are coming of age. I think next year will be crucial.

I also think that if Dantonio feels he can't win, he'll do the honorable thing and retire. He's earned that right.
