With apologies to Fats Domino ("Blue Monday"), I am admitting that there is some depression among conservatives in Michigan today.
No, I am not down about the U.S. House falling to the Democrats. I expected that to happen. As my esteemed co-blogger pointed out, dozens of GOP Congress members retired, which contributed greatly to the Democrat victories. Some of those who decided to move on may have been fed up with politics (either they weren't gung-ho about Orange Julius, or they were weary with the corrupt media's 90 percent negative coverage of conservatives). But the bigger point is that if the Democrat House clashes with the GOP Senate and White House during the next two years, and gridlock results, what's not to like? The less these clowns do, the better!
What I am bummed about is the fact that the Democrats had a clean sweep in my home state of Michigan. Debbie Stabenow defeated John James to retain her U.S. Senate seat. Gretchen Whitmer beat Attorney General Bill Schuette in the gubernatorial race. (It remains to be seen whether Gretchen will be another Gov. Tinkerbelle, but the chances are good.) Alarmingly, a far-left candidate named Dana Nessel (a lesbian to boot, which means an automatic gold star from progressives) defeated former Michigan House Speaker Tom Leonard in the Attorney General's race. And to make matters worse, the Democrat candidate for Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, defeated Republican Mary Treder Lang. A Democrat Secretary of State will have a few things to say about establishing legislative districts.
Three ballot proposals, each of which I voted against, passed: 1) legalization of recreational marijuana; 2) establishing a committee to oversee legislative redistricting (taking it out of the legisaltors' hands); and 3) allowing both straight ticket voting and "no reason" absentee voting. Also, in the spirit of "motor-voter" registration laws, just renewing a driver's license would enable one to register to vote. This is simply more dumbing down of the process and signaling voters that we don't expect them to become informed and engaged. Gumption? What's that? Apathy rules. Wake me in the morning.
Oh, and just one more thing: The lemmings in my college town have again voted to raise their property taxes, approving two millage increases for new building construction, upgrades, repairs and operating expenses. The leftists in East Lansing are always and forever looking for ways to spend money, and will never, ever have enough to satisfy their spendthrift ways. But you know how liberals are: If it's "for the children" it's automatically 100 percent virtuous. Don't you DARE mention waste, fraud, inefficiency, or greedy teachers' unions!
Anyhoo, life goes on. I've survived Nancy Pelosi, Jim Blanchard, Gov. Tinkerbelle, and a slew of Democrats running my alma mater into the ground. Lord knows, I'll survive Michigan under blue rule for a few years. As I've often said, count your blessings, enjoy life's simple pleasures, and live to fight another day.
