Today's release of the Department of Justice's Inspector General report regarding media leaks is chock full of fascinating tidbits, but the headline item is that: Former FBI honcho Andrew McCabe lied repeatedly (and stupidly) to investigators.
This is why he was fired.
He also could face criminal prosecution and the reason he hasn't already been charged is that the IG has no authority to prosecute, only investigate.
What I found particularly interested was how willing McCabe was to lie about his erstwhile allies, particularly James Comey and Lisa Page. The report documents who both pushed back vigorously against McCabe. Page had text messages to back up her story, but Comey's case was largely circumstantial (though very credible).
McCabe and his lawyer already responded to draft and basically argue that Comey shouldn't be believed because he's a liar. This creates a fascinating breakdown in the Democrat narrative, since McCabe and Comey are both supposed to be heroic martyrs who sacrificed their careers to stop Trump.
Now here they are calling each other names and saying the other can't be trusted. If McCabe does go on trial, his defense will necessarily have to destroy Comey's credibility.
Pass the popcorn.
The best part is that things are only getting started. Two additional investigative reports will be coming out soon, and I suspect the arena of combat will only grow. In addition to McCabe and Comey, Loretta Lynch, the White House and the Clinton campaign will be drawn into battle royal where the losers get jail time.
Against this background, the almost unprecedented raid on Donald Trump's personal lawyer seems more like a desperate attempt to change the subject than the move of a confident investigation poised to prove Russian collusion.
By the way, I urge our readers to check out the Conservative Tree House. Their coverage of this matter has been simply outstanding.
It certainly appears that the Cohen raid is, to use a favorite phrase of liberals, a "Wag the Dog" event.
