As an aside, the cultural differences between Chess and Go may be salient. Chess is about capturing a leader, while Go is about enveloping enemy forces.

More relatedly, it might be worth applying the theory of two-level bargaining to make sense of Chinese diplomacy (and all diplomacy, really).
