When Alexander the Great embarked on his great conquest of the Persian Empire, his uncle (also named Alexander) went the opposite direction - west. He did so in response to a request for aid from one of the Greek colonies in southern Italy. Much hard fighting awaited Alexander of Epirus and his campaign ended in his death on the battlefield.
There is a story that upon hearing of his nephew's sweeping conquests, he sourly remarked that the cause was that young lad had the good fortune to be fighting against women. "Here in Italy we fight against men."
History often turns on the quality of one's opponent. Many generals remembered as great were perhaps only average in ability - nothing spectacular, merely competent professionals who knew their craft. They achieved their victories because their adversaries were completely incompetent.
This is Donald Trump's greatest advantage.
Consider his GOP enemies. Between morons like Max Boot and Bill Kristol, one could not ask for a more pathetic set of opponents. Let us not forget the Kristol actually went on record as supporting the wholesale replacement of native-born American workers and a government coup by unaccountable bureaucrats. With enemies like this, who needs friends?
I'm not the first one to point out that the Democrats' decision to create a fake Russia scandal right from the get-go will have the foreseeable consequence of making an actual scandal look fake as well. It numbs the body politic and squanders what little credibility legacy media still enjoys.
It also sets the table for Trump to take a strong line against Russia and demonize dovish Democrats down the road. After screaming for months that Russia committed and act of war, Schumer and Pelosi have zero ground to stand on if Trump launches his own "mole hunt" against their staffs and cronies. Hillary is a big fat target for such a probe.
There's also the issue of illegal surveillance of the Trump campaign. The Democrats in their arrogance assumed that every single federal employee was with them to the death. That assumption is now being proven false. Patriotic career employees are now coming forth with evidence showing who did what and when.
As Commander-in-Chief Trump has the authority to declassify anything he wants, an ability Obama tried to abuse by allowing wider sharing of intelligence in the waning days of his administration.
Trump need only cite that precedent as he launches his own probe of the unaccountable deep state operatives.
The end result could be actual jail time.
The Dems no doubt figured that they would cripple his presidency, leaving him a lame duck from the get-go. They clearly didn't think through what his counter-move might be or their own vulnerability.
Just as with Boot and Kristol, they are so stupid they aren't even aware of the fact. Years of repeated failure without accountability have convinced these fools that they really are as smart as they think they are.
Donald Trump proved them wrong during the election and he's about to do so again.
