A couple of things struck me when I read the news Saturday morning about President Trump's Tweets taking Barack Obama to task for allegedly wiretapping phones in Trump Tower during the 2016 election.
First, the allegation itself is entirely plausible, as Obama's administration was known to oversee a massive surveillance state, and its targets included Fox News reporter James Rosen, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and many others. Former CBS News reporter Sheryl Atkisson reported that her personal computer had been hacked in the years 2010-13, ostensibly because of her critical reporting and book about issues such as Benghazi and Obamacare.
However, just because it is likely and Trump is angry about it (he must have suddenly come across or been informed of irrefutable evidence) does not mean he should have tweeted it out. Because, just as his administration was gaining momentum from his excellent address to Congress, and as plans to replace Obamacare, cut taxes and revise the immigration executive order were to be rolled out, Trump threw a monkey wrench into the machine. Now, the lunatics of the left will be frothing at the mouth even more than they already were.
The cacophony of the mainstream media, Democrat Party, academia and social media is like an enormous cesspool of unsubstantiated lies, conjecture, speculation and partisan hackery. Not that lies and hackery don't also occur on the conservative side, too, but the lefties engage in this garbage to a much greater degree, AND have a much more powerful megaphone.
It is indeed ironic that the same shrill left-wing critics who repeat ad nauseam the phony charges of Trump/Russian collusion in the 2016 election without having a shred of evidence are demanding that Trump produce evidence of Trump Tower being wiretapped. I am certain Trump would like to tell them to engage in a sexual act that is physically, literally impossible, if you catch my drift. It is also quite possible that Trump would be revealing classified information by getting into the weeds about how he knows his phones were tapped.
One other thing that so many dense observers have not even picked up on is the parsing of words by Obama supporters. Obama "never ordered" the wiretapping... Well, of course not. It was intelligence agencies that did so, and he almost certainly knew about it and approved of it. In that light, it is somewhat surprising that former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau tweeted:
"I'd be careful about reporting that Obama said there was no wiretapping. Statement just said that neither he nor the WH ordered it."
Isn't it rich that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is being trotted out on the TV news talk shows to deny wiretapping of Trump Tower. This from the guy who committed perjury in front of a Senate committee when he denied that U.S. intelligence agencies were collecting data on millions of Americans. Um, James, did you think millions of Americans were not aware of that gigantic data warehouse in Utah? You see, we're just not nearly as stupid and ignorant as you think.
One other point to ponder as we head into what promises to be a tumultuous week: The British Broadcasting Corp. and other news outlets have reported on warrant requests made by the Obama Department of Justice to the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, to wiretap at Trump Tower. So it certainly appears that the Obama administration was far more agressive looking into the alleged Trump/Russian collusion than the far more serious and evidence-rich connection between the Clinton Foundation and international pay-to-play donors. Why am I not a bit surprised?
Carry on, children...
