One of the long-standing gambits of the professional left is to go and find tame conservatives or "maverick" Republicans who will reliably parrot liberal taking points.
The left then points to these people and says "See, even fellow Republicans think this is wrong."
Generally this job has fallen to lickspittles like David Brooks, a "Republican" who just happens to have voted Democrat in the last three presidential elections.
But other than that, he's a true-blue conservative.
Anyhow, the Angry Left has decided that the next four years will consists of crying fits, street disorder and random hit jobs on the Trump administration. Their current target is Trump's mastermind, former Breitbart honcho Steve Bannon. They're calling him a racist, White Nationalist (that's a new one!) and (of course) an anti-Semite.
Because, you know, Donald Trump loves to keep Jew-haters around him (what with his Jewish daughter and Jewish grandkids).
Seriously, this is insane stuff.
There is nothing new here, just the usual "people are saying" crap mixed in with the "have you stopped beating your wife?" style questions being thrown at the Trump camp.
What's new is that Conservatism Inc. has decided to join the witch hunt.
I'm old enough to remember Jonah Goldberg angrily denouncing this game, but now he's down with it. The reason is of course that National Review hates Breitbart.
Breitbart has been an oasis during this election season, a source of constant inspiration and amusement. Naturally the left wants it dead.
So does Official Conservatism. You see, unlike National Review, Breitbart is actually gaining readers rather than losing them.
This is why Never Trump needs to be disposed of immediately. They have shown that in addition to being traitors during the election, they are happy to serve as Quislings after it.
