During his impromptu press conference this afternoon, President Obama was giving the press and public the hard-sell on why he chose to compromise with the Republicans regarding extending all of the Bush tax cuts. Once again, he came up with an obnoxious figure of speech. Remember a few weeks ago when he called political opponents "enemies"? Today, he referred to Republicans insisting on extending ALL of the Bush tax cuts as "hostage takers"....NICE! American Express commercials used to say "Don't leave home without it." That advice surely applies to foot-in-mouth Barry and his Teleprompter.
But I digress. During his rambling, Obama stated that tax cuts for upper-income Americans is a "holy grail" of Republicans. In truth, raising taxes on wealthier citizens is not just a holy grail for the left, it is an absolutely consuming obsession. This despite the fact it won't provide one more job to help a struggling single mother or father who's been laid off. All it will do is satisfy the jealous, Marxist bastards of the left who cannot accept disparities in income when any erudite progressive instinctively knows that the "enlightened" thing to do is have an all-wise, all knowing, benevolent government to ensure equality throughout our society.
Matter of fact, this manic fetish of the left has the activists burning up the White House phones with vitriol, spewing invectives on left-wing blog sites, and is causing steam to come out of the ears of Ed Schultz and Keith Olbermann.
Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and octogenarian Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey are threatening to filibuster to prevent the tax deal from going through. Sen. Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi are beside themselves. It's possible that pork-laden earmarks might have to be added on to pass the tax bill. The true believers on the left are blind with their obsession and don't give a rat's ass about hurting their own president.
Clearly, they are not just misguided; they're downright self-destructive. Let's say they get their way, and manage to stall or completely defeat the tax deal through December. Taxes will rise for everyone in a tough economy, causing more pain, probably higher unemployment, and even greater bitterness and cynicism in the populace. The public is not stupid (contrary to what so many Beltway elitists seem to believe), and the blame would fall squarely on the Democrats. They would be sabotaging their own party and their own president.
If you thought 2010 was a massacre at the polls, imagine what would happen in November 2012 if the Democrat lefties get their way on this issue. But then again, this is rational, common sense advice. It doesn't square with the emotional, impetuous tendencies of liberals.
President Obama apparently realizes he needs to "triangulate" to the center as Bill Clinton did following the 1994 election. He may have calculated that he stands a much better chance of getting re-elected by alienating the hard left and gaining support among moderates and less liberal voters, than to please the hard left and become estranged from everyone else. The infantile leftists aren't going to take it lying down. There is already talk of a primary challenge against Obama in 2012. Oh my, this could get REALLY interesting.
