Sarah Palin has announced she’ll step down as Alaska governor effective July 26 and hand over the reins to Lt. Governor Sean Parnell, who will be sworn into office at the end of the month.
Although she did not specify what her future plans are, many people assume she did this to gear up for a presidential campaign leading up to the 2012 election. If so, this proves she has a thick skin.
She constantly must endure the taunts and smears from the left wing, including a vicious hit piece in the left-wing rag Vanity Fair, and recent tasteless and vulgar jokes from David Letterman.
I am somewhat neutral as to whether she would be a good presidential candidate. I admire the fact that she took on the Republican establishment in Alaska, including former Attorney General Gregg Renkes and Oil and Gas Conservation Commissioner Randy Ruedrich, who chaired the state Republican Party. She wasn't afraid to tangle with cronies of powerful ex-governor Frank Murkowski.
I like her personally, and realize that no one becomes the governor of ANY state without having some intelligence and ability. The haters on the left, so devoid of substance, often resort to pejoratives like dumb or idiot. They did it to Reagan and G.W. Bush, and they do it to Palin. They also use “fascist,” “Nazi,” “Hitler,” “neanderthal,” etc. This from the so-called tolerant progressives.
They jump all over misstatements of their opponents, but somehow remain reticent about outrageous statements made by the likes of Joe Biden, Robert Byrd, Nancy Pelosi, and Dick Durbin.
This is the kind of slime Mrs. Palin will have to endure if she does decide to run for President. It would make sense that she would need to resign the governorship to run for the White House, since being tied down in Alaska prevents traveling the lower 48 states for glad handing, schmoozing, and speaking at fundraisers.
Some think Palin resigned because of ethics charges against her and her refusal to spend a fortune on defense attorneys while having her name dragged through the mud.
We will learn more in the coming months. But meantime, this blogger wants to say, “Thanks for your service, Governor Palin. I’m sorry you’ve had to endure so much crap. But the ugliness says much more about those who hurl it than the one it’s aimed toward."
