The Posse hasn't blogged about politics much, largely because the heavy-hitters seem to have it covered and we have so little time. However, the political ineptitude and increasingly aggressive defeatism of the Democrats has taken us by surprise.
We figured that, having secured Congress, the Dems would enjoy the fruits of their labors, sit back and watch the President twist in the wind, and count their campaign contributions, which surely are surging since they get all the committee chairmanships.
Instead, they've apparently decided to start believing their own press releases. They have convinced themselves that the razor-thin margin of their victory in November was not a function of GOP ineptitude and alienation of the conservative base, but rather a national seismic shift to the left of Ted Kennedy.
Hence this fascinating article about their latest maneuvers.
On the face of it, the idea of trying to tie the president's hands is stupid in the extreme. It will quite literally place Democrat fingerprints all over the inevitable defeat. Unlike in Vietnam, American troops returning from the debacle will not be quiet or bullied into silence. As Iraq begins to collapse and radical Islam surges forward to fill the vacuum, the finger will be squarely pointed at Defeatist-in-Chief Pelosi.
The key to the entire exercise can be found in this sentence:
In a closed-door meeting, former President Carter's national security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, tried to convince party skeptics that the bill was their best chance at ending the war.
Wow. This is beyond parody.
They dug up Jimmy Carter's foreign policy brain trust - because we were so much more respected when our embassy was overrun by Islamic fanatics and the Soviets were on the march.
This doomed legislation is a gift - a beautiful gift to the president. Just when it looked like the Dems might be able to score some points, George W. Bush and the rump Republicans can begin the process of redeeming conservatism by voting against profligate spending and a blatant attempt to cut off defeat our forces in the field.
We really have only one question: Are the Dems honestly this stupid? To they seriously think that setting a definitive date won't allow the cut-throats and thugs to lie low until we leave?
Do they think that Iran and Syria won't simply pull back their agents, build up their strength, and then strike on April 1, 2008, the day after we leave?
Actually, if they were smart they'd strike as our troops were pulling out, knowing that we were too few and too weak to stop them.
We'd love to ask General Pelosi what she would ask of the rear guard if suddenly they are ambushed and put under heavy attack. Obviously we'd have to keep the date, so basically all attacks on U.S> servicemembers after March 1 would be retaliation-free.
If they aren't on the other side, they sure look like it.
