Like most Americans, the Posse formerly didn't have any grudge against Muslims. We figured there were good ones and bad ones, and that the bad ones represented a lunatic fringe whilst the rest simply wished to get on with their lives, provide for their families and pray in peace.
After 9/11, we remained convinced that this was the case, that despite a few unassimilated nut jobs, most American Muslims were squarely on our side - the side of religious tolerance and secular government. Indeed, we felt that there were many points for agreement between observant Muslims and Christians - particularly in political issues such as homosexual "marriage," prayer in school and school vouchers. Here (we thought) were people who shared a desire to keep religion in the public square, allies against the militant atheists who wished to drive God out of the country.
Over the past five years, we are no longer so sure of Muslim good will. Partly it is because of the Cartoon Riots and similar disturbances.
But a major source of our distrust comes from interviews like these.
Michelle Malkin is superbt, but listen to the part where the "moderate" Muslim is asked about Sharia law. He hems, haws and says he's for it and then tries to b.s. his way out of it. Oh yes, he wants pluralism and tolerance and peace, but Sharia offers none of those things to non-Muslims.
As we've said before, if you are going to lie to us, at least have the decency to tell good lies. Don't insult us with icrap that we can instantly verify as false - it isn't just rude, it's insulting to our intelligence.
The fumbling over Saudi Arabia's religious tolerance of other faiths was classic. Clearly the man's chutzpa had some limits.
The Posse does not wish to begin suspect all Muslims of harboring a secret desire to overthrow Western socity and impose a caliphate. Yet when these are the kinds of spokesmen Muslims offer, is it surprising that people turn skeptical?
ADDENDUM: France already has its own Intifada. How long before the idea spreads? Given the utterly untrustworthy nature of Islam's spokesmen, preemptive deportations and internment no longer seems so far-fetched.
Of course we live in Michigan. Our inner cities are already burned out (see Detroit, ruins of). So maybe there isn't that much danger after all.
