One of the lessons from Hurricane Katrina is that we cannot rely on the government to protects from everything all the time.
The Posse directs you to this summary by Michelle Malkin. Once again we see that disaster brings out the best and worst in people.
One of the reasons the Posse favors firearms ownership is that it is often the only way to protect oneself in such a breakdown of law and order.
While anti-gun activists claim that such instances are rare, we have seen them three times within the last 15 years: Hurricane Andrew, the LA Riots and now with Hurricane Katrina.
Be certain of this: the roving gangs of looters need no firearms. Their numbers and physical size allows them to plunder and murder at will. Unarmed citizens can be robbed and beaten with impunity - unless they have the means to protect themselves.
The National Guard and local police are not sufficient. Even then, these men and women have families of their own. Who will protect the families of the protectors?
Guns will.
Many anti-gun supporters have remarked that "assault rifles" like the AR-15 have no legitimate purpose. This situation proves them wrong.
We own a Bushmaster, and have commented on it before.
What an AR-15 permits is a single or pair of citizens to fend off a far larger body of looters. The high magazine capacity means less reloading. The ease of shooting means almost anyone can use it. Its light weight is also a consideration when one has to carry one's belongings.
Finally, the sheer intimidation of having the thing is most likely a major deterrent.
While the we have enjoyed speculating on what to do if zombies attack, looters are a very real threat.
Even a shotgun or hunting rifle is better than nothing and just as in LA and Florida, those law-abiding citizens willing to defend themselves, their family and their property with firearms are in a better situation than those who choose to remain helpless.
The question each person must ask is: when a situation like this arises near you, will you be one of the weeping victims or a resolute defender of others?
