Cowards and deserters
Captain Ed links to the tale of an Army deserter who has fled to Canada.
There are few terms to loaded with contempt as those of "coward" and its close cousin, "deserter," but both seem to apply in this case.
The Posse strongly supports our troops, but we understand that not all of them are heroes. A great many people join the military for a great many reasons.
A lot of them are world-class idiots. Oh the stories we could tell.
The service members described in this story seem to fit that bill.
Previously, we noted that there is a strong desire in the anti-war community for widespread mutiny and desertion in our military.
During the presidential campaign, John Kerry and his surrogates constantly used terms like "back door draft" to describe using reservists and played up the sufferings of mobilized National Guardsmen.
These deserters fall into the same category: they will be lionized by the anti-war movement because they represent the only way to cripple the war in Iraq.
Having failed to garner an electoral majority, they are trying to break the will of our fighting men and women.
They used similar tactics in Vietnam, but since our present troops are volunteers, their job is a lot harder.
This is the key difference and one that Captain Ed and Michelle Malkin hammer home with brutal clarity.
Whatever one thinks about the war, these people volunteered for service and can either fulfill their obligations or go to prison.
If they believe they have witnessed war crimes, they should report them up their chain of command, the inspector general's office and to Congress if necessary.
Absent that, they seem like nothing more than opportunistic cowards who believe that if they sing off the left-wing music sheet, they will recieve some sort of protection from their felonious behavior.
Extradition proceedings should begin immediately.
UPDATE: Drudge has a link detailing more of this sordid story. This bit is priceless:
A Washington Post reporter covering the hearings said Americans are extremely sensitive to Hinzman's request for asylum because of parallels to the Vietnam War.
"There's a great deal of worry that Iraq is beginning to look a little like Vietnam," said Doug Struck.
No shit. But they aren't worried, they are eager, salivating over each and every parallel they can draw to Vietnam.
They are just waiting and praying for a Lt. Calley to appear and start slaughtering Gooks.
And if they can't find one, they'll make it up.

The first time tragedy, the second time farce. Thus devolves the antiwar movement.

It takes much more courage to say no to war and face punishment than to blindly follow orders to kill other people.
